The only wall that will be moved has been stripped and framed. We moved this hallway wall by the entrance from the garage back two feet to accommodate some lockers to create a small mud room area. Adding more storage was key and I think that this small addition will help sell the home whenever we plan to move out.
This monster of a fireplace has been completely stripped of the stone. (you can view before photos here). We're going to case in the fireplace and add built-in bookcase on each side. This is one of the projects that I am the most excited for. I honestly think the fireplace looks better totally bare like this than it did with the stone lol. The new fireplace will add a dramatic new focal point to the room and completely transform the space.
The granite in the kitchen has been ripped out and the doors are all gone. I wasn't too keen on removing all of the doors; I thought it was a waste of money. But Nic convinced me that if we're going to remodel this house to our taste we might as well do it right the first time...and so off came every single interior door in the home. (the front door is also going to be replaced as well). If you look closely you can see that the baseboards are gone. This was another project that Nic had to talk me into but I'm sure it'll look much better when everything is done. Besides, the company that is refinishing the floors said that the baseboards might get damaged as they did their work so it seemed worth it to just replace them with what we like.
Side note...I was so surprised to see that under the baseboards, headers, and crown molding was this sea foam green color paint. Our contractor said the texture they used on the walls must have been green...totally bizarre...
In the living room that is being transformed into an office we made the opening for the new french doors 8 feet to match the 8 foot front door. It really opened up the room and made a big difference. I actually think that the room feels bigger now with the 8 foot openings. We already purchased our furniture for the office from Restoration Hardware and I cannot wait to reveal it when the remodel is done.
All the crown molding was ripped out so that we can add the coffered ceiling that I am oh-so excited about. (here is a pic from my last post on the reno of what the new ceiling will look like)
We also had our first set back. Just like in the HGTV shows something ALWAYS has to go wrong with a renovation. We might have identified some water damage in the office. This would be a HUGE problem as we are hoping to put hard wood floors in. Our contractor is having it checked out before we proceed with this room to ensure that there are no leaks that have not already been fixed. Keep your fingers crossed for us that this will not be a huge issue!
Also, in the photo directly above you'll see that the ceiling has been adjusted in the small hallway connecting the main living space to the office. There was this random spot in the hall that goes into the office where the ceiling was sloped and lowered, and just overall uneven. Our contractor is extremely detail oriented and it was driving him nuts! We came to the house one day and saw that he had evened it out and I thought that was so thoughtful. He really is just as meticulous about details as Nic and me.
Here in the master we measured for the windows that we will be adding above where our bed will be. In the original plans for the house there were 5 square windows layed out on the west wall of the master bedroom. We wanted to add 3 square windows which worked out perfectly because they were already framed! That was a very pleasant surprise...especially on the day that we had learned of the possible water damage in the office. Pleasant surprises are always welcome!
And here is the fireplace in the master bedroom that we attempted to demolish ourselves. As you can see we left a huge gaping hole in the drywall at the bottom because we pealed it off along with the tile...whoops! That will be super easy to fix and Nic and I will always remember our first attempt at a home improvement project together.
We should see much more progress on the house in this coming week. I can't wait to start seeing everything come together. If you want to see the "before" photos links to those posts are below.
Thanks for reading and have a fab Monday!
